St. Louis Blues try to fend of San Jose Sharks but fall in second overtime 3-2 -NHL Playoffs Update
St. Louis had everything they needed written down and practically being done but San Jose Sharks were just too hard headed going into game-one of the 2012 National Hockey League (NHL) Western Conference playoff quarterfinals, taking down Blues 3-2 in double
overtime on Thursday night, April 12, at the Scottrade Center in Saint Louis, Missouri.
There was not a single goal or a penalty during the opening period which had both teams on the edge entering the second 20 minutes of regulation.
San Jose barely made it back into the playoffs on time and they certainly are not planning on going out that easy if they do not make a run for the cup.
"The boys were in the hunt for the playoffs and I'm glad I could help them get in," said Martin Havlat, who led San Jose to the postseason during the final games. "I got to know the boys a little bit more on the ice and I was ready to help them in this first
game."Now, we're in the playoffs and I'm excited."
Havlat played a huge role again as the player stayed hot. He kicked off the scoring on their first power play opportunity with St. Louis’ David Perron on the benches for slashing.
Patrik Berglund wanted to bring St. Louis back into the matchup and that is exactly what he did by scoring two straight goals, with the second on an added man advantage of their own. His first came on a lucky backhanded tip in during a scramble for the puck
in front of the San Jose net while Andy McDonald found Berglund open for a breakaway and fired it past Antti Niemi.
Andrew Desjardins got the miracle shot for San Jose to keep them alive in the contest as Tommy Wingels failed on his narrow attempt, leaving the rebound open for Desjardins to force an uncertain overtime extension.
Martin Havlat surprised the crowd with the game-winner in double overtime right after a face-off in the St. Louis defensive end as Ryane Clowe fed him the puck for a one-timer right past Jaroslav Halak.
Game-two between St. Louis Blues and San Jose Sharks will be taking place on Saturday, April 14.
