St. Louis Blues win 3-2 against league leaders Vancouver Canucks
The first game of Monday saw the St. Louis Blues play host to the league leaders Vancouver Canucks. The game took place at the Scottrade Centre with a capacity crowd coming to witness the game which was the 845th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL
Premiere Series.
St. Louis Blues scored the first goal of the game and led at the end of the first period. They scored once again in the second period. Though the Canucks responded to this with a goal but they fell short by a goal in the end. Alex Pietrangelo, defenseman
of the Blues was named the star selection of the game with his two assists.
St. Louis Blues were definitely the better of the two starters in the game and they piled on pressure on the opposing team right from the word go. Though there were many shots on goal early on but unfortunately neither of them found the back of the net.
With some strong plays and hard work up front the Blues successfully score through Andy McDonald from a brilliant strike in the 6th minute during power play. Getting into the lead didn’t stop the Blues from attacking so they kept on piling pressure
on the opposing team. However, Canucks also piled up some brilliant pieces of play and it wasn’t long till they scored the equalizing goal.
The goal was scored by Henrik Sedin in the 11th minute through a brilliant flick shot. Blues with the confidence in their attacks managed to get past the opposing defence once again and scored through Alexander Steen from a brilliant backhand
shot to get back into the lead in the 13th minute. The remaining part of the period saw the Blues continue on the same roads but unfortunately they weren’t able to score any further goals.
The period ended with the Blues leading 2-1 as they made 11 goal attempts in the period while the Canucks could only manage 6 goal attempts.
The second period of the game started off strongly for the Canucks as they came up with the occasional shots on goal and constructed some brilliant attacks. It just didn’t seem to be their day as the frontline constant failed to find the back of the net
despite the numerous chances they got early on.
Nevertheless, Blues weren’t disheartened and they started to attack as well. With the passage of time, Blue defence got stronger and their offence got threatening. Resultantly, the Blues scored through Patrik Berglund from a decent strike in the 18th
minute during power play to double their lead.
There were a few more goal attempts but no more goals were scored as the period ended with the Blues leading 3-1. During the course of the period, Canucks made 8 goal attempts while the Blues made 14 goal attempts.
The final period started off with the Canucks scoring in the 2nd minute through Jannik Hansen to cut the lead to a goal. However, this was the only goal that was scored by either of the teams in the period.
The final period proved to be the most productive of the periods in terms of goal attempts but unfortunately goals weren’t as common. The period ended with the Canucks making 11 goal attempts in the final period while Blues made 9 goal attempts and they
won the game 3-2.
