NHL Latest – St. Louis Blues win 4-1 against the Columbus Blue Jackets

The 416th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series saw the home team, St. Louis Blues play host to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The match took place this Thursday and went as predicted, in favour of the home team.
The St. Louis Blues made a good start to the season after which they lost a couple of games and lost hold of the top positions they maintained for a couple of days. The game was witnessed by around 19,000 fans that came to watch the match as the both teams
played the 27th game of the campaign.
The home team exploded right from the start of the match, firing shots from everywhere on the rink. They didn’t give the away side any time and space to settle.
The St. Louis Blues scored in the 2nd minute to take lead of the match. The goal was scored by Alexander Steen from a brilliant flick shot. The away side managed to come up with some good pieces of play but they couldn’t
score during the course of the 20 minutes.
The home team on the other hand, continued to press on. As a result, the St. Louis Blues doubled the lead in the 14th minute. The goal was scored by Jay McClement from a spectacular long range shot.
The period ended with the St. Louis Blues leading 2-0 as they made 10 goal attempts while the Columbus Blue Jackets made 7 goal attempts.
The 2nd period was evenly matched between the two teams. Goal attempts and strong defence was observed from both. Each team had their chances in the period but they failed to capitalize on them.
The away side had plenty of chances to level the scores but it just didn’t seem to be their day. The last part of the period was totally dominated by the home side as they came up with a very strong finish to the period.
The St. Louis Blues scored in the final minute of the period to take the score to 3-0. The period ended on the same score line with each team making 9 goal attempts.
The final period started off decently for the Columbus Blue Jackets as they fired shots on the opposing goal right from the start. The away side was rewarded for this as they scored in the 7th minute to take the lead
to 2 goals.
The goal was scored by Jan Hejda from a quick fired shot that went into the back of the net. The Columbus Blue Jackets continued to pile pressure on the home side. The Blue Jackets put all their men forward which resulted in them
being caught off guard in the 18th minute.
Consequently, the home team sealed the match as they scored through David Backes and the St. Louis Blues won the match 4-1. The final period saw the Columbus Blue Jackets making 12 goal attempts while the St. Louis Blues made 5.
