St. Louis Cardinal lose to New York Mets 6-8 – MLB Update
The St. Louis Cardinals failed to maintain their winning momentum on Thursday, September 22 and lost to the New York Mets 6-8 at Busch Stadium.
Virtually winning the game by 6-2 by the end of the eighth inning, the Cardinals’ closer Jason Motte was subject to grand hits by the Mets’ hitters who scored six runs to completely reverse the tide.
Just when the entire team was desolate and heartbroken, the team manager commented. "Don't make a mistake and say we're heartbroken," La Russa said. "Our heart's beating. We won the series, get ready for tomorrow.”
Jason Motte who has remained an otherwise effective closer for the team, failed doing what was expected of him here. "He may be getting distracted by somebody thinking he's the closer," La Russa said. "He's not the closer. He's the closer a lot of times.
He doesn't need to be distracted by that nonsense."
Thursday’s game began with Allen Craig hitting a two-run homer in the very first inning, giving the team a 2-0 lead. Jake Westbrook, the starter of the Cardinals for the game pitched exceptionally good innings to keep the Cardinals’ lead intact.
With Jake Westbrook successfully containing the New York Mets’ hitters, the Cardinals seemed to have had a very smooth ride in the game. It was Ruben Tejada who scored the first run for the Mets in the fifth inning to bring the lead down to 2-1.
Albert Pujols hit a homer and Yadier Molina scored a single to left to put the lead to 4-1 as the fifth inning came to an end. Molina hit another one-run double and Tyler Greene had a single to left to make it 6-1 for the Cardinals by the end of the seventh
inning.
As the Cardinals appeared to be in complete charge of the game, the Mets’ hitters turned things upside down in the ninth.
Motte, coming as a closer, was first hit by Justin Turner and then by Jose Reyes whose respective singles made it 6-4 for the Mets. Ruben Tejada hit a two-run single to tie the score. While Motte was settling himself, Willie Harris had another two-run single
to not only score the tiebreaking run, but also kept the Mets full of confidence in the game.
Bobby Parnell came to pitch the ninth and tossed a shut-out inning to wrap up the game with an 8-6 victory for the New York Mets. The Cardinals were devastated, as they played well throughout the game and looked like they would take a much needed victory
until their poor performance in the ninth. The Mets will be full of confidence as they fought hard and got an impressive win.
