St. Louis Cardinals’ 3-2 win over Milwaukee Brewers a good morale-booster – MLB News
The defending World Series Champions St. Louis Cardinals’ 3-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday, July 16, brought a tremendous amount of relief in the team following the series sweep they had to face against the Cincinnati Reds.
Monday’s game, where the Cardinals were supposed to fare better in the wake of embarrassing back-to-back defeats, saw Allen Craig hit a single at the top of the ninth inning to bestow victory over the Brewers.
With that, the Cardinals also won their first game in the last four. The Cardinals had earlier vowed to have a better second-half of the season because they had ended up third in the National League Central.
Reds are currently occupying the top position in the Division now, something that Cardinals really want to reverse. Monday’s game could be a beginning in that regard. The team manager Mike Matheny has a future strategy with all optimism.
"We're playing the game the right way, and I think the guys on this team believe in themselves and each other that there's better baseball out there," Matheny said. "That starts with today and we'll take it one game at a time."
Allen Craig, who was instrumental in Monday’s game victory, is one of the players with remarkable confidence and hope for a better second-half of the season ahead.
"We always feel like it's only a matter of time," Craig said. "We have a lot of good hitters on the team. Like I said before, when we're taking really good at-bats, good things are going to happen."
Monday’s victory was all the more important because losing it would have been a tremendous confidence shattering scene for the team. Lance Lynn’s good pitching, wherein he struck-out 10 batters, ended with a total of six hits in the seven innings that he pitched.
Days ahead will be crucial for the defending champions. The fact that the Brewers are also striving to end the season with the top position and Reds in the race, the Cardinals will try to go ahead with more energy and force to get the slot they’re aiming at eagerly.
