St. Louis Cardinals' Kyle McClellan to start rehab beginning of November – MLB News
St. Louis Cardinals' Kyle McClellan stated on Monday, October 1 that he is feeling good and strong enough to start rehab at the beginning of November. McClellan had undergone shoulder surgery to repair a frayed labrum and a split shoulder capsule in July, which turned out to be season-ending.
With the surgery that McClellan had to undergo, initially it was unclear when he would restart rehabilitation until it became known that it would possibly be in the final weeks of November. Now he is well ahead of his schedule to commence the rehab.
"It's gone as good as it can go," McClellan said. "Strength-wise, I feel strong, I feel good. Pain-wise, there's just a very small area where I feel it a little bit. Now we're doing strengthening in this area so that should eliminate it."
It is good news for the pitcher. The fact that head physician Dr. George Paletta has also approved over-the-head strengthening exercises bode well for the pitcher, possibly expediting the rehab process.
If all goes well, he will then be allowed to throw a short distance into trampoline. Since the surgery may result in complication if care and caution is not exercised, the pitcher is being extraordinarily cautious.
Also important at this point in time is the status of McClellan in the team as he will be an arbitration-eligible player in the coming year. As to whether the Cardinals will go for extending a contract for him is largely unknown at this point in time.
For McClellan, as it seems, that is not something to be bothered about. He is focused upon the rehab that is to start in the beginning of next month.
“That will all come this offseason," McClellan said of his future. "We'll cross that bridge when we get there. There's definitely a possibility of it and there's a possibility of coming back. I haven't spoken to anybody about it and they haven't spoken to me.”
McClellan could only make 16 appearances this year. What the team has in mind for him for the future cannot be stated with certainty. But for now, his regaining fitness and form is important.
