St. Louis Cardinals' Lance Berkman unlikely to play this year – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals' first baseman Lance Berkman on Sunday, October 21, suggested he might not be able to play in the World Series should his team qualify for the post-season series. Lance Berkman had undergone knee surgery in September and is out of the roster since then.
There was a buzz earlier that the player might retain his fitness prior to the commencement of the World Series. However, that apparently no longer appears to be a likely prospect now after his recent statement.
In September, it was the second knee procedure that the player had to undergo. To make a return, he wants 100 percent fitness, which does not seem to be the case even though he has been rehabbing for a while now.
"It's coming up here pretty quick," Berkman said of the Fall Classic. "I'm not going to rule it out entirely, but I just don't want to put the team in a bad spot. I have to be pretty close to 100 percent or I wouldn't want to take a spot."
Like Berkman made it known, he does not want to create a tough spot for the team at this point in time. The Cardinals are already engaged in a competitive National League Championship Series wherein the resurgent San Francisco Giants have already covered enough ground after ceding enormous space initially.
For Berkman to return, as he puts, it is necessary that he scores. "I have to be able to score," Berkman said. "With a 25-man roster, you don't want to be in a spot where you are burning players because I can't run. That has to be a factor.”
He lays out a practical hypothesis for his reappearance. Berkman thinks if he had a couple of weeks more, he might then be able to make it to the roster. He said, "If I had another couple weeks, it would be easy. But we don't have that."
With the assertions, what is now clearly known is that Berkman has to wait for the next Major League Baseball season in order to be part of the active 25-man roster.
