St. Louis Cardinals' Shelby Miller looks forward to Major League games – MLB News
With the likelihood of Chris Carpenter coming back in the line-up ever bright, the St. Louis Cardinals’ young pitcher Shelby Miller said on Tuesday, September 4, that he had seen the possibility of making it to the Majors if he performed well.
Shelby Miller, who was promoted to the Major League only recently after Triple-A Season, can also be made a starter if things go in the right direction.
"I knew it was always a possibility if I had a good year," Miller said of the callup. "It took a huge turn and I started pitching a lot better. It's just a huge honor. I tried to keep a positive look at it all year, and now I'm here."
Having previously remained a Minor League pitcher of the team, he was also the top prospect of the club. Now that he has made it into the Major League, he looks forward to contributing positively to the team.
But the challenges abound. If nothing else, his initial start was fraught with difficulty. For example, he had a 6.17 ERA in his first 17 games. But afterwards, he had 2.88 ERA in 10 starts, with 7-2 record in just over 59 innings, having had 70 strike-outs.
That is not the only thing that commanded attention. The fact that he had to regain some weight made a good part in allowing him to ease his way into the Major League. Adding 10 pounds thus helped him a great deal.
Miller finds it encouraging that the team was following the progress he was making.
"Going on how I started, I didn't know what was going to happen," Miller said. "I could have gotten traded. They could have given up on me. I stayed positive. I turned my season around. I took everything into consideration. Now, I'm here and I'm happy.”
If Miller continues pitching the way he has pitched in the last few months, he will undeniably be a strong and consistent part of the St. Louis Cardinals’ bullpen or rotation. His start with the bullpen, nonetheless, will be closely watched as the season progresses and the playoffs get near with increased competition in the Division.
