St. Louis Cardinals' general manager all praise for manager Mike Matheny – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals' general manager John Mozeliak has lauded Mike Matheny for the outstanding managerial skills he exhibited in the first year of his Major League Baseball career.
Cardinals had entered this year’s MLB with a change of guard. The very fact that experienced manager Tony La Russa took his retirement after the Redbirds’ triumph in 2011 World Series had created a vacuum that Matheny seemed to somehow fill.
Other than how Mike Matheny ably managed things, there were a host of other issues that eventually resulted in the seemingly unanticipated elimination of the Cardinals from the National League Championship Series.
Those include and were not limited to, the injuries that plagued the club. All said, Mozeliak believes the team has a couple of encouraging things to their credit as they make their bid for the 2013 MLB season.
"One is the ability to have [first-year] manager [Mike Matheny] step up and show that he is a Major League manager," Mozeliak said. "And two, I think the story going into the season was a little bit about our vulnerability with age and with medical [issues]. Some of that proved to be true, but what also came of that, which is what I'll point to, is the fact that we had a lot of young players step up and perform at a high level.”
Mozeliak is quite optimistic for the future prospect of the team. Faced with numerous challenges, with an ever competitive National League Central and National League as a whole, the Cardinals are bracing themselves to effectively grapple with the challenge.
He added, "So I think when you look at this organization and our club moving forward, there's a lot to be optimistic with because of how these young guys performed."
The Cardinals performed really well throughout the season despite all the odds that came their way. Even though they could not eventually prevail over the San Francisco Giants, who edged their way into World Series, the Cardinals remained outstandingly well.
It will be interesting to see how the same line-up and with manager Matheny, performs in the coming season.
