St. Louis Cardinals' starter Kyle Lohse’s outing in NLCS Game 7 a debacle – NLCS News
With the supposedly unexpected result of the National League Championship Series for the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday, October 22, wherein the San Francisco Giants beat them to qualify for the World Series, there was a lot to mull over for the Cardinals.
Starter Kyle Lohse, who was one of the consistent starters for the Cardinals, failed in NLCS Game 7 as he surrendered five costly runs in merely two innings. Giving up six hits, he had a 7.04 ERA. Compared to him, Matt Cain gave did not give up any run with only five hits in 5.2 innings.
"I got myself in trouble early, and there's not room for error in a game like this," Lohse said. "It just happened to be the worst possible moment."
Lohse, in the regular season, had 16-3 record with 2.86 ERA. Unlike his fellow starters like that of Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright who struggled in previous counts, Lohse was being looked to with hope and optimism.
However, what turned out was a result that could, at best, be called disappointing. The Cardinals had to bring in the reliever Joe Kelly to replace him, but he too could not quite execute the target, giving up two runs and as many hits.
Just like the defence was not at its characteristic best, the offence was at its lowest here. In the last three games, even though it was one of the best offensive line-ups out there, the Cardinals only scored one run.
"When you score one run in three games, you're not going to have a good chance to win," Descalso said. "You can talk about anything else, but if you don't score, you're not going to win ballgames. They didn't make many mistakes, but it's on us to make adjustments and score runs. We just weren't able to do it."
In all it was a collective failure, if not complete collapse, of both offence and defence in the National League Championship Series that led to the defeat and ouster of the St. Louis Cardinals; resulting in disappointment as they will not be moving forward for a chance in the World Series.
