St. Louis Cardinals’ Albert Pujols possibly looking at biggest contract in MLB history – MLB News
Many baseball experts all agree to one thing and that is the tremendous abilities of St. Louis Cardinals’ right hand first baseman Albert Pujols. He is considered as the best player in baseball, next to Alex Rodriguez. However, many now feel that he may
quite possibly be a better player than Rodriguez and that Pujols now deserves to be paid at the same level as Alex.
If any player deserves to get the highest salary in Major League Baseball history, it is Pujols. He has consistently performed season after season as a nine-time All-Star. He has managed to hit 30 home-runs for 10 consecutive seasons with ease.
Most experts are perplexed at the fact that Pujols is not even the highest paid player in the Cardinals, as Matt Holliday makes more money than Albert. Not to take anything away from the abilities of Holliday, but he is not as good as Pujols. Whatever the
case, Pujols now realises his worth and has told the Cardinals his wishes to be paid more than what he is getting. Also the fact that he can become a free agent after the 2011 season is not making things easier for the team.
Only players like Alex Rodriguez can be mentioned in the same breath as Pujols. However, Alex makes much more money than Pujols, almost double the amount. Rodriguez managed to get paid close to $33 million last season. Most experts now feel that Pujols should
be making the same amount that Rodriguez does, purely based on his tremendous performances during the season.
The Cardinals will undoubtedly want to retain Pujols for as long as they possibly can, however it seems that they might not have the financial capacity to do so. It is rumored that the team offered Pujols a 10 year contract worth $200 million, but he declined
it as it seems he is looking for something closer to $300 million. This has put the Cardinals in a difficult position as their financial position does not allow for such a high salary for one player.
The assumption is that the Cardinals and Pujols may agree to a deal closer to 9 years for $262 million. However, there has been no word from either side regarding this offer. Currently the Cardinals will be looking to find a way to retain Pujols for at least
a year to work out a serious MLB record shattering contract.
It will be interesting to see what the Cardinals offer Pujols as they get ready for the start of the 2011 regular season. Only time will tell if the Pujols gets the money that his performance deserves.
