St. Louis Cardinals’ Carlos Beltran’s tests clear, anticipates appearance in Game 5 of NLCS

A night after knee injury which culminated with the early exit of Carlos Beltran, the St. Louis Cardinals' manager Mike Matheny said on Thursday, October 18, that the slugger’s tests were clear but he had still some issues to start.
"He went through some tests, and everything came back pretty clear," Matheny said. "But [it is] still bothering him to the point where we can't start him."
The Cardinals did secure a win in Game 3, bringing Matt Carpenter to replace Beltran. However, the senior player – owing to his extraordinarily good record in post-season games, is required in the offence.
With over 100 post-season game experience, Beltran was expected to pinch hit in the Game 4 of the National League Championship Series, but the team decided to not go for the option given the robust performance exhibited by the batters.
Prior to Game 4, Beltran said, "Comparing the way I felt yesterday to the way I feel today, I'm better. But it's still sore. Hopefully, one more day will give me the chance to get a lot of treatment today. Right now, my concern is just being able to play in the outfield. I took some swings before, and it doesn't really bother me. I can be available to [pinch-hit]."
It is Allen Craig who will now replace him a night after Matt Carpenter had been brought as replacement. Being the first baseman, Craig is expected to do the needed for the team.
As for Beltran, Matheny said that the player was doing all he can to start in Friday’s Game 5. Given the fact that the team now has a 3-1 lead, Beltran has a distinct opportunity to make a comeback to only embolden the offence here in order to pave the way for NLCS victory, but also make them strong enough to compete in the World Series.
With all the tests clear, much to the delight and satisfaction of the team, Beltran’s presence on the field in Friday’s game – if he makes it, will be of great significance, instilling confidence in the offence to face the Giants' pitchers.
