St. Louis Cardinals’ Chris Carpenter fails to make his mark in Game 2 – MLB News
Chris Carpenter failed to make his mark in the first experimentation of pitching after three days’ rest. Neither could he contain the ever charged Philadelphia Phillies’ offence nor was he able to last long as he was soon relieved when he pitched the fourth
inning.
It obviously did not augur well for the St. Louis Cardinals’ ace starter. When he was asked by the reporter what he felt after the game, he stated that he was upset over his performance in the game. Short of humour due to the serious urgency of the occasion,
the Cardinals’ pitcher needs a little breathing space for now.
The fact that there were a few arguments that ensued while he was pitching in Game 2, throwing 30 pitches in the first and 26 in the second, Chris Carpenter did not seem to have complete grip on the game.
He also took some issues with the home-plate umpire Jerry Meals. The decisions on strike zones not only ruffled Carpenter but also the team manager.
"Well, what would I add is," La Russa said, "it'll get me in trouble, but I'll do it anyway, is they're pitching to two different strike zones."
But despite the unpleasant odds that Carpenter faced in Game 2, giving up four runs and allowing five hits with a 12.00 ERA, the team skipper still believes Carpenter is one of the good things to happen to the Cardinals.
The skipper said, "He has just been a great pitcher, as good a pitcher as any starting pitcher in either league, especially good in the clutch when you need him.”
Even though things did not go particularly well for Carpenter, the Cardinals managed to win the second game by 5-4 to tie the National League Division five-game Series. St. Louis will be looking to Carpenter to possibly start in one of the remaining games
of the series as the pitcher needs to redeem himself from his poor showing and guide the team to a win over the powerful Phillies. It will be interesting to see what impact Carpenter will have later in the series.
