St. Louis Cardinals’ Chris Carpenter focused on Opening Day Game – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals’ starter Chris Carpenter stated on Tuesday, February 28, that he is focusing on the Opening Day Game, not the ongoing throwing session. There were suggestions earlier that he might have been struggling to regain momentum for pitching.
But such notions were effectively dismissed by the team’s manager Mike Matheny on Monday, saying Carpenter was to be prepared for the bigger game. Matheny was referring to Opening Day, something that Carpenter alluded to on Tuesday.
“I know when I need to be ready and that's Opening Day, not February 28," Carpenter said. "I'm not concerned about [throwing 273 1/3] innings last year. I worked hard this winter. I feel strong. I got prepared to do the things that I normally do."
Chris Carpenter was a success story the past season. The rich arsenal of pitches and different techniques, with distinct combination of power and effectiveness, paid well for the Cardinals starter who won the most crucial of the games during and the postseason.
The Cardinals are currently considering trying the pitcher in four games prior to the start of regular season. The 36-year-old pitcher will surely unleash his lethal pitching weapon once he comes to play; but he needs to be mechanically right.
He wants to show consistency as a hallmark that can be safely attributed to this accomplished pitcher if his past season’s record is anything to go by. “Ultimately, that's what you want to do. But if you pay attention to it mechanically, it's going to be
easier to make that consistent throw."
Chris Carpenter had his first throwing session on Tuesday, marking the start of this season’s endeavour whereby he will be a key player in bringing victories to the Redbirds. Until Monday, Carpenter was the only Cardinals pitcher who has not thrown any pitch
in the camp.
As he has formally started throwing now, the fans and the management will be looking at him on the pitching mound with bated breath. What Carpenter achieved the past season, the Cardinals hope, will be repeated here to bring more glory to the Redbirds.
