St. Louis Cardinals’ Chris Carpenter paid tribute for his performance – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals on Friday paid rich tributes to their ace starter Chris Carpenter for outrivaling the Philadelphia Phillies Roy Halladay and helping the team win the National League Division Series by 1-0, with a 3-2 win in the series overall.
The eagerly awaited and enthusiastically anticipated duel between Chris Carpenter and Roy Halladay ended with Carpenter pitching a complete shut-out, not allowing any runs to end the first game with a 1-0 score since the 1921 World Series.
"I think [Carpenter] will remember this forever," manager Tony La Russa said. "And so will the Cardinal fans, going into this game against Halladay and winning 1-0."
Cardinals’ victory assumed tremendous significance owing to the fact that St. Louis cashed in on their starters and beat the Philadelphia Phillies, which had an amazing record of over 102 wins this season.
Known for their friendship and being colleagues making a shared journey into the tantalizing world of baseball, both Carpenter and Halladay not only entertained the fans and critics alike on Friday, but also got their names listed in the best do-or-die pitchers’
clash in the history of baseball.
With their victory in such a crucial game, the Cardinals are now looking for their National League Championship Series game against the Milwaukee Brewers. Chris Carpenter might not feature in it due to having just played a historic game.
"I really do think he can pitch with three days' rest," the manager said. "Early on, his delivery was out of whack, [pitching coach Dave Duncan] fixed it and it was too late. But [Friday's start] was fair."
His fellow pitcher Jaime Garcia fairly distinguishes between the Phillies and Brewers. Although Carpenter will not be part of the game, even he will like him to be part of it. Carpenter is managed to put in consistently good performances for his team. The
management and his team-mates respect this fact. Chris is a tremendous pitcher that has the ability to take control of a game and dominate the batters.
Whatever the approach the two teams might have had, there is one thing for sure and that is Chris Carpenter will be someone difficult to handle were he to appear in the game.
