St. Louis Cardinals’ Chris Carpenter to face Roy Halladay in series-decider Game 5 – MLB Playoffs
The St. Louis Cardinals’ ace pitcher Chris Carpenter will face the Philadelphia Phillies’ Roy Halladay on Friday, October 7 in the decisive Game 5 of the National League Division Series.
Becoming good friends, they have remained team-mates in the past when both of them started their career in the Minor League, making an arduous but glorious journey into the Major League.
But their coming together and facing each other in one of the most important games makes it a striking occasion.
"I don't know if it's ever happened in an elimination game like this, that two guys who were teammates in the Minor Leagues and Major Leagues still maintain a friendship [faced off]," the Cardinals’ team manager La Russa said.
Both are Cy Young Award winners as well. At Citizens Bank Park, the Cardinals’ starter will pitch in a game that could not have taken place had it not been for an extraordinary performance that St. Louis put throughout the post-season games.
Phillies were predicted to remain at the helm and obliterate the Cardinals in Game 4. However, with a vow to prevail, the Cardinals edged past the Phillies, drawing the series 2-2.
Nonetheless, Friday’s encounter at Citizens Bank Park does not arouse much animosity. If there is any hostility, so to speak of, it is tinged with professionalism.
"Not only is Chris a good pitcher, but he's obviously a good friend," Halladay said. "You know, we've talked about this scenario. I think it's something we're both looking forward to.
Despite the sensitivity of the emotions attached with the game scheduled to be played on Friday, Carpenter knows that in the end their friendship will still be intact.
With the game on cards, with bated breath shall the baseball fans watch the decisive Game 5 on Friday as the two friends, colleagues and new rivals will face each other. Both teams will fight it out for a chance to take a victory and advance into the National
League Championship Series and move one step closer to the World Series.
