St. Louis Cardinals’ Chris Carpenter to start Game 1 of World Series despite soreness in elbow
The soreness in the St. Louis Cardinals’ starter Chris Carpenter’s right elbow will not deter him from pitching in Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday, October 19 against the Texas Rangers. The apparent injury had triggered fears that he might not be
able to pitch for the team.
However, Carpenter dispelled any such impression and tried to play down the apprehension that he would not be available for Game 1 and if the team makes head-way, Game 7 of the World Series.
The problem arose after Game 3 of the National League Championship Series against the Milwaukee Brewers. Although Carpenter won his game against Yovani Gallardo, he also received treatment for soreness in the triceps muscle.
His Tuesday’s exchange with the mainstream press regarding his injury was, apparently, to thrust the point that he will play despite all the concerns making rounds in and around the club for his potential appearance in Wednesday’s game.
"Coming out of that start in Milwaukee, I've got 200-something innings, 4,000 pitches or whatever and it's the middle of October," he said. "Everybody's got soreness and everybody's got aches. I got some treatment on my elbow.”
The fact that he beat the likes of Roy Halladay in a duel watched with awe around the World proves he will be the single most important figure for the St. Louis Cardinals in the team’s battle against the Texas Rangers.
“I've worked too hard to put myself in any situation or any risk where I'm going to do any damage to myself," he said. "I've gotten to the point where, if I shouldn't go out there, I'm not going to go out there.”
Having a 3.71 ERA in the ongoing month whereby he has pitched 17 innings, Carpenter has a total of eight strike-outs having given up seven runs and allowed 14 hits. When Game 1 of World Series starts on Wednesday, it will be worthwhile to watch how he pitches
against the Rangers with soreness in his elbow. The Cardinals will be looking to Carpenter to guide them in Game 1 of the World Series.
