St. Louis Cardinals’ Daniel Descalso to replace David Freese at third base – MLB World Series
The St. Louis Cardinals’ manager Tony La Russa will keep changing the game strategies as the World Series enters into a decisive phase. La Russa now has the intent to bring Daniel Descalso for defence in Game 3 instead of David Freese.
This, he thinks, is due largely to the fact that Descalso enjoys superiority at third base compared to anyone else in the team. Since Descalso remains more skilled and advanced there, David Freese is now considered changed from third base.
"At this point in 2011, Descalso is a better defensive player than Dave," La Russa said. "Because of range and ... that's not going to be true throughout David's career, but if you have the lead -- I don't take him out if we're behind or the score is tied.”
Such a change may raise a few eyebrows. However, Tony La Russa, known to be leading the team with strict set of rules, is hardly bothered about it. For him maximising the team defence is a priority that he cannot overlook.
That is why Descalso, in La Russa’s view, deserves to be at third base. “If we're ahead, I think it's pretty standard over the years. If you're ahead, you want to do everything you can to keep the lead."
While David Freese is expected to play an integral role in taking the team’s defence up in Saturday’s game, the fact that Tony La Russa has brought Descalso signifies the player has got the potential.
Saturday’s Game 3 is expected to be high scoring. Given the fact that Texas Ranges’ offence has given the best pitchers a tough time, the Cardinals will have to formulate a plan that favours the team.
With an ingenuously workable plan, a well co-ordinated effort by both the defence and offence may yield the fruit the team expects to get. It will be interesting to see how Descalso fits in and is able to make an impact, as one of the most important games
of the series is about to be played.
