St. Louis Cardinals’ David Freese bags World Series’ Most Valuable Player Award – MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals’ third baseman and National League Championship Series’ Most Valuable Player, David Freese, produced an all-round performance in Game 7 of the World Series to help his team subdue the Texas Rangers 6-2 on Friday, October 28 at Busch Stadium
in St. Louis, Missouri and subsequently cap his postseason with another MVP Award.
A native of St. Louis, Freese was named MVP for his invaluable contributions throughout the World Series, including a walk-home home-run in Game 6 that gave the Cardinals another life in the Fall Classic. After splitting the first two games, the Cardinals
annihilated the Rangers 16-7 in Game 3 at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington to gain a 2-1 lead in the seven-game series.
Making a roundtrip to the World Series, the Rangers won back-to-back games to take a 3-2 lead and bring themselves just one win away from bagging the first World Series crown in the 51-year history of the franchise. The Rangers, after losing to San Francisco
Giants in five games last year, had vowed to return to the biggest stage of baseball in a bid to become Champions. However, Ron Washington’s army failed to capitalise on its second chance, returning empty-handed yet again.
Cardinals’ starter Chris Carpenter leaked two runs in the first inning, but Freese did not allow Matt Harrison set foot on the mound, driving in a two-run double in the bottom half to bring the game back in balance. This effort engraved Freese’s name in
history as the only player to drive in more than 20 runs in a single postseason series.
"This means everything," said Freese. "Just from the beginning, to get drafted, then the Cardinals seeing something from me, it working out for me to get traded over here, the excitement of my friends and family and everybody around me."
Talking to reporters after the game, Freese pointed out that he could sleep for about 45 minutes last night and could not understand what was going on around him. He asserted that the veterans have taught him how to go about this game and becoming MVP without
their assistance would not have been possible.
Freese emphasised that the character of the team was exuberant throughout the season and that he is proud to be a part of this team.
