St. Louis Cardinals David Freese focused on the new season –MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals third baseman David Freese said on Monday, April 09, that he is focused and is doing his part to help the team win the championship. Freese was expressing his views on the recent spring training where his performance was not up to
the mark.
Having remained the World Series Most Valuable Player in 2011, wherein the helped the team thrash the Texas Rangers in the best-of-seven finals, his Grapefruit League stats were much below the expectations.
The third baseman had 48 at-bats wherein he hit .188, something he might not have anticipated coupled with no less than 16 strikeouts. However, he has gone well beyond that now already with his supremely commanding performance in the regular season so far.
"I'm focused and just trying to do my part," Freese said. "When those lights come on, you have to execute, you have to produce. We compete here to win a championship. It's no different this year."
The team manager, Mike Matheny, on the other, also acknowledges how he found the player frustrated after the Grapefruit League. But, for the team manager, the player pressure is what he thrives on, and has the knack to make a comeback.
"He was frustrated in the spring trying to figure things out," said manager Mike Matheny. "He's gotten himself into some big situations so far. He thrives on that. He has that knack. He's got some confidence going now."
That is undeniable given the performance since the Opening Day game. The player has already hit 2 homers with 8 RBIs to his credit, having had .667 SLG as his batting average stands at .417.
The player’s instrumentality in the offence is something that the team heavily depends upon. Were it not for his extraordinarily superb performance in the World Series last year, the Cardinals might not have prevailed over the Texas Rangers at the end.
With his stats improving, and performance ever more dominant, David Freese will remain a treat to watch this year again. If he maintains the same performance, it will be safe to conjecture that the Cardinals will once again carry the day.
