St. Louis Cardinals’ David Freese named winner of the Heart and Hustle Award – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals third baseman David Freese on Wednesday, July 25, was named the winner of Heart and Hustle Award. The award is handed out to one player of each team in both the American and National Leagues.
Handed by Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association, David Freese deservingly became the winner for the wonderful performance he has exhibited this year. For the avid fans of baseball, memories of his magnificent display in last year’s World Series' sixth and seventh game are still fresh.
Heart and Hustle Award is handed out to each player after the formation of a committee formed by MLBPAA.
A total of thirty committees, that have alumni players representing them, choose a player each from thirty teams after assessing a few necessary fundamentals.
They include and are not limited to, passion, desire and work ethic shown. This ethic is to be shown not only on the field, but also off the field.
The St. Louis Cardinals’ third baseman seemed excited after being nominated and named for the Award.
"I think when you're out on the field you want to play hard and do what you can," Freese said. "You don't strive for getting these awards because that's not what it's all about. But when you get recognized, you're very appreciative."
This comes at a time when the Cardinals are putting more efforts to keep the chances of getting to the post-season games alive. Although challenges abound, the Cardinals are not known to yield easily.
Thus, it goes without saying that Freese will have a major role to play as far as the dynamic offence is concerned. With winning this Award, which will be presented by John Mabry – an alumni Major Leaguer who had represented the Cardinals for 14 years in the big leagues, Freese has won another glory.
Freese had a comment on that great player. "The way he went about it, being successful but his work ethic and being a good teammate, that's what people remember," Freese said while speaking of Mabry.
For the 2011 World Series Most Valued Player, this Award will be another great addition to his long list of achievements.
