St. Louis Cardinals: Deserving winners of the 2011 World Series title
In what could be described as one of the most thrilling best-of-seven games in the history of baseball, the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday, October 28 beat the Texas Rangers 6-2 to win the World Series at Busch Stadium.
Cardinals came across as the personification of determination and resilience to triumph.
Trailing behind by 3-2 in the Series as the Rangers touched new heights with their performance, the Cardinals turned the tide and crushed the Rangers with dazzling impunity, notching up the coveted title with glory.
When the Series began, energy, enthusiasm, potential acrimony, passion and expectations had permeated the atmosphere which inarguably is the characteristics of such a big event. When it ended, it had enviably refreshing fatigue, excitement, disappointment
and emotion in its fold.
Both teams offered what they could to not only bring home the majestic grand glory, but also provide what was sheer joy for the avidly anticipating fans. While the Rangers trounced their opponents throughout the season with relative quiet and ostensible
ease. The Cardinals traversed with fervour and beat any and every team that had the potential to challenge it.
The Cardinals, since the start of the season, made improbable comebacks. Just when it could hardly be reliably predicted, they would astonish the fans and critics alike with their amazing performance to rise. Ascension they made when they won the Wild Card
race against the Houston Astros. Note here the ace that played the most crucial part was Chris Carpenter.
He pitched, let’s frankly put it, a stunner. A pitching extraordinaire as he had a game of 11-9, in his career complete shut-out to help the Cardinals beat the Houston Astros 8-0. He continued his brilliance as the post-season formally began in action.
Cardinals were faced with the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League Division Series. The team which did not know what losing meant. They had such a lofty record of victory that it was with huge skepticism that one would predict their defeat. However,
the Cardinals did what they were distinctively known for as they won it 3-2.
They were faced with the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Championship Series. The Brewers had the best record in around three decades, making it to the NLCS. But the Cardinals trounced them 4-2 whereby both their defence and offence took a turn
for the better, improving their record further.
When they came face-to-face with the Texas Rangers, there was a mixed feeling. They were all set to win, as they were all set to be beaten. The available choices would preferably stop at the former. Although they trailed, seemingly left behind with a 3-2
lead by the Texas Rangers, they did it on Thursday in Game 6, winning by 10-9 to level the series and then on Friday to win the title.
"I don't care what other people remember. We fell a little bit short," Josh Hamilton said. "Hats off to the Cards, they did a great job, especially last night."
If anyone could aptly put it into words the year which saw the Cardinals win their 11th World Series title, it was La Russa.
"It's hard to explain how this happened," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said. “If you watch the history of baseball, teams come back."
They came back with a grandeur that will go a long way to define the excellence of the St. Louis Cardinals.
