St. Louis Cardinals’ Jaime Garcia knows how to be successful – MLB News
With the Cactus League just around the corner, the St. Louis Cardinals’ starter Jaime Garcia stated on Friday, March 2, that he is making adjustments and will see what can be done to be successful. Faced with unusual challenge within the team in the presence
of consummate pitchers like Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright, Garcia ought to do a lot to get space in the bullpen.
As big as the magnitude of this task is, Garcia seems all ready for the challenge.
“I already know myself, and I already know what I need to do to be successful and what I've done to get me to the big leagues," Garcia said. "It's about maturing and being able to make adjustments. I'm trying to get to the point where I can be my own coach
and make adjustments and basically do what works."
The 25-year-old pitcher has been putting considerable effort in Spring Training to be prepared for the new season without trying to steal much media attention. The fact that he had Tommy John surgery has not stymied his march to success.
This, as he puts it, comes by being unsatisfied and willing to work hard for a place. "I'm trying to prove myself out on the field -- don't get satisfied, don't get comfortable," he said. "I'm still battling to try and make the team.”
Having made his debut in 2008, he has held a career ERA of 3.27 in 70 games, winning 27 of the 70 games played. He has lost 16 since then in 374 innings that he has pitched, having had 296 strike-outs.
But it is his last two years’ performance that holds key to his supposedly good stats. In 2010, and 2011, the player has, in 36 starts, won a total of 17 games with a 2.74 ERA and maintaining a 1.25 WHIP.
As to whether he will be able to have one of the best seasons of his career this year is something that remains to be seen. What is known is that he faces great challenges especially when he has to excel in the presence of Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright.
