St. Louis Cardinals’ Matt Holliday continues his baseball endeavours despite all odds – NLCS Update
St. Louis Cardinals left fielder Matt Holliday on Friday, October 19, appeared in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series against the San Francisco Giants and was 4-for-0. The team went on to lose the game 5-0.
With a pair of RBI hits that Matt Holliday had in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series, Friday’s performance may not well be up to the mark. However, given the overall performance of Matt Holliday in the post-season, it is good enough.
Holliday was informed of a shocking development last week that his mother had been diagnosed with colon cancer. His mother, Kathy Holliday, was then brought in to St. Louis to have her tumour removed.
The surgery that took place on Thursday, even though worrying and shocking for Holliday himself, did not affect his performance in Game 4 wherein he had a pair of RBIs. The team went on to win 8-3.
Holliday had admitted after Game 4 that the whole week was tough for him; but he knew he had to reconcile and deal with it.
"It's been hard. This week has been hard. But it's part of life. It's part of being a big boy. You have to deal with stuff that happens in life. I wish it hadn't happened, but she is doing good. We've had great support,” Holliday had said.
Reports indicated that his mother’s surgery was successful and the treatment provided was excellent. There are hopes and expectations that she will recover soon; something that Holliday also spoke of.
"We found some good doctors in St. Louis," Holliday said. "She's been treated by gold. Hopefully we can move on. The doctor was very pleased with how it went."
For those who remember the 2011 post-season, Holliday was instrumental in the team’s eventual victory in the National League Championship Series against the Milwaukee Brewers with his .435 batting average.
As the St. Louis Cardinals compete against the Giants, they hope to make it to the World Series again; Holliday’s role, undeniably, will be of critical importance in it.
