St. Louis Cardinals’ Mike Matheny excited on eve of Opening Day game - MLB News

The St. Louis Cardinals’ manager Mike Matheny will write a new chapter in the club’s history on Wednesday, April 04, when the team will have the Opening Day game against the Miami Marlins. He will be the first manager of the club since 1978 to have led a well-established team at the age of 41.
The last time this milestone was achieved by Jack Krol in the aforementioned year. For now, though, Mike Matheny will have the managerial responsibility as the youngest active manager in the Major League Baseball, a landmark very few – if any, attain in the game.
What constitutes uniqueness about it is the fact that the St. Louis Cardinals are currently the World Series champions. Mike Matheny, being the young manager that he is, will have colossally huge responsibility on his shoulder to oversee the team.
His predecessor Tony La Russa continues to be one of the exceptionally capable and overachieving team managers in the history of Baseball. Thus Matheny inheres a significant deal to preserve and treasure.
It is for this reason that a sense of excitement has descended upon Mike Matheny who is awaiting the Opening Day game at Marlins Park. As to whether this is excitement or nerves, he has his view to share.
"Maybe I'm just not smart enough to distinguish between nerves and excitement," he said. "I can't wait to get out there and watch these guys do their thing. They've competed well. They've worked hard. They did everything, and everything that we asked them to do, they met and exceeded.”
The team manager also has the newly built and awe-inspiring Marlins Park in the mind when he talks about the excitement which permeates the camp as well. “Now, it's kind of a reward for them to be able to play a game and show the fan base we're excited about moving on."
It will be thoroughly interesting to see how the Cardinals perform under his auspices. To be defended is not only the World Series title, but also the ability to remain dominant in the league as one of the best sides.
