St. Louis Cardinals’ Mike Matheny lauds Kelly and Rosenthal as two demonstrate talent – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals' manager Mike Matheny on Sunday, October 21, lauded the rookie pitchers Joe Kelly and Trevor Rosenthal as the two have almost become a regular part of the 25-man roster. Kelly, inducted as the reliever, has gone on to show his efficacy and effectiveness even as the starter.
While both were initially touted as the solid relievers, adding to the bullpen’s strength, Kelly has come forward as an incredibly talented pitcher.
The very fact that they were even used in the post-season games manifests the talent and quality that the Cardinals produce.
"The guys have been thrown into big situations and have delivered," said manager Mike Matheny. "So it's been something that's worked in the past and is working right now. But we have some very good instructors in our Minor League side in the development department, and I know that the way they prepare them sets them up for being successful at this level."
In the 24 games that Joe Kelly played, he made 16 starts, having had 3.53 with 5-7 record as he pitched a total of 107 innings with 75 strike-outs to his credit. From the Minor Leagues to the Major Leagues, Kelly has shown remarkable knack to pitch in any capacity.
For Kelly, team’s reposing its confidence in him and slating his name for the post-season games is not only a matter of pride, but also an opportunity to demonstrate his talent.
“There's nothing better than going out there and being able to compete for your team, especially in the playoffs," Kelly said. "Being one of the younger guys, I went from starting to go into the bullpen this year.”
As Kelly ascended as the starter from being a part of bullpen, Rosenthal is also being tipped as the next starter for the club.
Cardinals are currently competing against the San Francisco Giants in the National League Championship Series. Kelly had started in one of the important post-season games in the National League Division Series.
It will be interesting to see if Cardinals bring in Kelly to start in any game of World Series should the team qualify.
