St. Louis Cardinals’ Rafael Furcal to undergo aggressive therapy treatment – MLB News
With options apparently limited, the St. Louis Cardinals' shortstop Rafael Furcal is all set to undergo a platelet-rich plasma injection on Tuesday, September 4, which is part of the aggressive therapy treatment after the right elbow injury that he sustained.
Once he has undergone that injection, the shortstop shall not be able to do anything with his right elbow for at least 15 days.
This is a negative development given the fact that he was one of the important parts of the club’s offence and defence. His diagnosis with a Grade 2 strain of the ulnar collateral alignment was said to be a season-ending injury.
However, he hopes he will be able to make an appearance this season. Whether that happens or not remains something uncertain. But what is interesting to note here is that he remains positive about his return.
"I have to listen to what the doctors say about how I'm feeling, because I don't want to lose this year and then the whole next year," Furcal said. "I'm getting my mind positive. I think I can play before the season is over."
As for the surgery, Furcal has to wait at least for a month as the doctors will assess the need and possibility. To repair the ligament damage, Furcal will have to undergo surgery.
If surgery becomes necessary, that will effectively put an end to his hopes of returning this season and may render him unable to play at the start of the next season. That prospect is unsettling for the player.
Furcal’s contract with the Cardinals will remain through the next season. If he manages to come back, his return will be a good sign for the Redbirds this season given the stiffening of the competition this season.
He wishes to be around and vows to be. "I'm going to be around," Furcal said. "It's a team, and I want to support my team. I want to be around, talking loud with my teammates."
Cardinals are hoping to get past the Wild Card race and make it to the playoffs. Whether they will be able to do that is a challenge that they are preparing themselves for.
