St. Louis Cardinals’ Shelby Miller starts a solid Major League career – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals' manager Mike Matheny on Wednesday, September 5, expressed his happiness over the first and remarkably solid appearance of pitcher Shelby Miller in the game against the New York Mets.
Although the Cardinals lost the game 6-2, it was Shelby Miller’s two shut-out relief innings that commanded enormous attention and widespread appreciation from the club and fans alike.
"I'm happy for Shelby," manager Mike Matheny said. "It was a nice way to break into the league. It was a good test for him. Any test your first day in the big leagues is tough. He did a nice job, did everything we asked."
Miller collected no less than four strike-outs in the two innings that he tossed, both of which remained scoreless. He was 19th overall pick in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft. Making it to the Major League was likely because he was being tipped as one of the finest young pitchers around.
While this was an important moment to remember for Miller, he commented that more time for warm up would have allowed him to remain more comfortable. But he hopes he will have a better feel in the future.
"Having a little more time [to warm up] probably made me more comfortable out there," Miller said. "You can't really always expect to have that much time going in. That's one thing that I'll have to get used to. At the same time, I think things went really smoothly, and I think I'm going to have a better feel in the future."
Cardinals are competing for the Wild Card. Facing competition from the Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis has to make a lot of adjustments. With the young, energetic and ambitious Miller on the mound, the dream may materialise if the defence and offence combination remains strong.
Having thrown 20-25 warm up pitches, Miller probably wanted more before the commencement of the big game. Nonetheless, the presence on the mound in the Major League is ‘a big dream come true’ for the Miller who will now have responsibility on his shoulders to strengthen the bullpen for the Cardinals.
