St. Louis Cardinals’ Skip Schumaker out for the rest of the season – MLB Playoffs
The St. Louis Cardinals lost Skip Schumaker for the rest of the season in the National League Championship Series on Sunday after the injury he suffered on Friday. The game against Philadelphia Phillies which saw the Cardinals win 2-1, also witnessed Schumaker’s
worsening straight right oblique muscle.
After his inability to appear in Saturday’s practice session, the team decided to take him off the National League Championship Series while looking for other players to add in the roster. The likely prospects include Kyle McClellan and Lance Lynn.
Much as the playoffs constitute a pivotal and exceedingly cherished part of baseball, Schumaker will certainly miss the NLCS. But to play was to further worsen the injury. While he had problems on Friday, Saturday and Sunday saw things aggravate.
“It was a little more sore this morning, no doubt about it," Schumaker said Saturday. "I don't know how long it's going to be. It's not the kind of thing where they can just tell you it's a week or 10 days."
Having an average of .600 in the NL with 10 at-bats, he had six hits with three RBIs to inspire the team to the winning stand.
Schumaker had a strained oblique muscle while at-bat in Friday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Soon after he seemed having difficulty while walking, the team decided to remove him.
"It was [on a] check swing the second at-bat," he said. "I felt it there, and I kind of walked around a little bit to shake it off, and the next [pitch], I swung and it grabbed pretty good."
Nonetheless, with the setback that St. Louis has received, whereby the 9-6 loss to Brewers added salt to the injury, the Cardinals are not throwing in the sponge. Focused on Monday’s game, the Cardinals will certainly do all it takes to reverse the tide.
The team will be looking to put in a good performance and dominate the game early in an effort to level the series. The Brewers aggressive game play has put the Cardinals on the back-foot in Game 1. It will be interesting to see what impact the loss of Schumaker
will have on the Cardinals as they get ready for Game 2 of the NLCS.
