St. Louis Cardinals’ Skip Schumaker to play in centre-field – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals’ out-fielder Skip Schumaker dispelled any impression on Thursday, October 27 that he had any concern playing in centre-field. Schumaker was recently brought in to replace Jon Jay whose performance had seen decline lately.
But as he remains a regular out-fielder for the Cardinals, there is barely any doubt that he will discharge his responsibility as centre-fielder. However, there is a curiously different outlook that Schumaker had not thought of when the World Series kicked
off.
While Jon Jay was to be at centre-field, there was no chance that Schumaker would actually feature in the World Series. But as slumping Jon Jay failed to come out of the seemingly endless circle, it was about time that Schumaker got the chance.
So he did at the end. Previously, it was the strained right oblique muscle that put Skip Schumaker out of the National League Championship Series restricting him to play in any of the games. All the same, there was a major concern within the team as well
regarding his fitness.
Even the team manager Tony La Russa was initially hesitant when it came to giving Schumaker a chance, largely because of the uncertainty surrounding the player owing to his injury in the NLCS.
However, as he has recovered now and Jon Jay has been unable to live up to the expectations of the team, Schumaker is all braced to play in centre-field for the rest of the World Series games.
"I didn't know how it was going to play out," Schumaker said. "So yeah, being back in the outfield has been -- I think I've logged more innings in my career as far as Minor Leagues, college, whatever it was, in the outfield, more than I have at second base,
so it's more natural to me, obviously."
That experience is rare for him. With the World Series entering a decisive phase, there are huge expectations from every Cardinals’ player to inspire the team. Skip Schumaker, fortuitously has the chance to not only add an embellishing feature in his stats
but also to the team.
