St. Louis Cardinals’ Tony La Russa confident winning NLCS Game 6 – MLB Update
Talking to reporters on the eve of Game 6 of the National League Championship Series, St. Louis Cardinals’ manager Tony La Russa remained adamant that his team is in ideal form to prevail against the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday, October 16 and thus qualify
for the World Series.
However, not going overboard, La Russa was quick to add that the Brewers are a strong offensive side and will not be an easy opposition in the all-important game. He added that both teams have an attacking instinct and thus a high-scoring game may well be
on the cards.
Explaining his choice of keeping faith in Edwin Jackson as starter for Game 6, La Russa clarified that the pitcher has talent and athleticism and has a lot more than just throwing in his repertoire. He commented that Jackson understands pitching and throws
according to the game situation.
On a question regarding how long will Jackson stay on the mound, La Russa said, "Edwin's going to decide how far he goes. It depends on how he's pitching. I don't go in thinking let's get 5 1/3 from him. I don't think anything. I just watch the game."
La Russa asserted that his job was to just watch the game and ensure that the team sails smoothly. In the end, it is the players who decide who will play. Cardinals’ closer Jason Motte, however, played this down and stated that La Russa is just being humble
in not accepting responsibility for the team’s success in the playoffs.
Motte said, "He knows how to push the right buttons. You can say what you want, but it's worked so far. He knows so many stats and so many numbers and situations, this and that, everything he does, he does it for a reason."
The Brewers had an astonishing run at home in the regular season, but home-advantage will have little meaning when the Redbirds charge for a win against the Brewers at Miller Park. Having said this, a comeback can never be ruled out in baseball.
The winner of this series will play against Texas Rangers in the World Series.
