St. Louis Cardinals’ Tony La Russa not disappointed by Game 2 loss – MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals’ manager Tony La Russa did not express disappointment after falling 1-2 to Texas Rangers in Game 2 of the World Series on Thursday, October 20 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri and instead said that it was a close game and could
have gone either way.
Talking to reporters after the game, La Russa stated that starter Jaime Garcia worked really hard to keep the Rangers at bay, but the bull-pen just could not hold on to the lead. Nevertheless, La Russa was quick to add that the Rangers won and thus deserve
credit for putting in the extra effort in the ninth inning and thus splitting the first two games at Busch Stadium.
La Russa clarified that the Rangers are a good ballclub and have an excellent defence to compliment their offensive powerhouse. He added that the opposition played well against closer Jason Motte in the ninth inning, advancing batters and then scoring. He,
however, did not blame Motte and asserted that it was the brilliance of the opposition more than the closer’s fault which led to the loss.
Denying the proposition of walking Josh Hamilton in the ninth inning, La Russa clarified that it would have made matters tough for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals had a good chance to gain a commanding 2-0 lead in the Fall Classic, especially playing at home, but failed to take advantage of the situation and will now head to Rangers Ballpark in Arlington for the next three games with the series level
at one-each.
La Russa said, “We recognize that what we take care of is how hard and how good we play. You're playing against legitimate competition and if they get the win and beat you, you tip your cap. We did the best we could, and they did it better, so series 1 1.
The only time you have regrets is if you didn't compete the proper way, and we did, and just got beat.”
Praising Garcia and Allen Craig, La Russa stressed that the starter will be used again in the series and that Craig will be given more chances in the starting line-up in Texas.
