St. Louis Cardinals Triple-A first baseman Matt Adams undergoes right elbow surgery – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals were met with shocking news on Tuesday, August 14, of Triple-A first baseman Matt Adams’ season-ending surgery on his right elbow. Adams was expected to be part of the Cardinals’ line-up in September.
The surgery to remove bone spurs, nonetheless, proved decisive and led to the end of any chance that Adams would be part of the Major League team once again this year.
Cardinals which have recently witnessed some improvement – after weeks of unimpressive performance, will definitely benefit by the arrival of this young talent. But the problem that began in his right elbow in April led to discomfort in late June just when he was recently put in the Major League line-up.
St. Louis had placed Adams on the Minor League disabled list in June, hoping he will return soon. But nothing of that sort – much to the disappointment of the Cardinals, materialised, causing a setback at this point in time.
The team general manager John Mozeliak shed some light on it and the complications that Adams was facing.
"We tried to manage through it, but it was affecting him in a negative way and he felt it was time," general manager John Mozeliak said. "It hurt when he would swing, not every swing, but it got to a point where he was no longer comfortable. Rather than fight through it, we thought it made sense to have the surgery now so that he would have a normal offseason."
It is worthwhile to remember that Adams had .244 average in the 27 games that he played for the Cardinals when he was put in the Major League line-up. Once he was placed in the DL list due to discomfort he was encountering, Adams had .284 average with five homers and 14 RBIs there.
Adams had remained Cardinals seventh best prospect this season, something that led to the consideration of his name for the Major League.
In Triple-A games, Adams had an overall .329 hitting average, hitting 18 homers and 50 RBIs. With his season-ending surgery, the Cardinals will now have to look for another substitute given the need in the line-up.
