St. Louis Cardinals and Chris Carpenter in talks for two-year contract extension – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals are all set for making an announcement for the contract extension of one of the key players the team boasts. The right-hand starter Chris Carpenter is said to be in engaged in talks over the possible extension likely to be enunciated
pretty soon.
However, Chris Carpenter was pretty much unforthcoming about the possible deal. On Monday, September 12 there was no official word neither from the team nor from him as to when is it getting signed.
But it was also revealed that everything will be made known by Tuesday; something that is now being eagerly awaited. With the reports making rounds that the right-hander is in talks with the team indicates it may well be signed.
“I'm not going to say yes or no," Carpenter said. "There's obviously something going on, but it's not 100-percent done yet, and I don't want to jinx it. I'm sure that tomorrow -- or I'm hoping that tomorrow -- I'll have a lot more to say about it."
There is absolutely no denial that Carpenter would prefer staying in the team. There are reasons for it. First and foremost, it is the period of affiliation with the team which extends for years now. Secondly, Carpenter is already 36-years-old which is a
bit of constraint for other teams to consider for making deals with the starter.
Carpenter makes no secret of the fact that he wants to stay with the team. With 13 years experience in his arsenal, while he may be a favourite for a deal by other teams, he stated earlier that he wants to stay with his team for now. "I've said all along
that I wanted to be here," Carpenter said, "and hopefully we'll get this done and I'll be able to be here for a while."
Having made 30 starts in the 2011 Major League Baseball season, Carpenter has so far pitched 206.1 innings, having given up 93 runs with a 3.75 average. His WHIP stands at 1.30 while he has contributed to 9 wins for the team with 164 strike-outs as he has
lost 9 games. In September, he has been able to pitch only 15 innings, having had a 3.60 ERA.
The St. Louis Cardinals are standing 12th in the ranking with 79 wins to their credit and are just a few games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the Central Division. It is therefore necessary for the team to have a strong pitching lineup to play
against the rival teams with the required confidence in the days to come. That confidence will be emboldened as the contract extension is signed with Carpenter.
