St. Louis Cardinals and Yadier Molina close to contract extension – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals and catcher Yadier Molina are reported to be inching closer to a contract extension. A report on Monday, February 27, in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch with the sources not mentioned, stated both the team and the catcher are almost close
to finalising the deal.
As to when the deal will materialise and come to effect is not known. But the report says it will be completed by the end of this week. There have been talks of extensions for the players, but this will be the first ever indication of the Cardinals determined
to sort this matter out.
Molina’s contract with the team will end this year. He had signed a five-year deal with the Cardinals. Before becoming a free-agent, Molina will have a good chance to stay with the team which has already won numerous glories including of course, the past
season’s World Series title.
His presence in the camp prior to the reported date goes to testify that he is ever more willing to go along with the team and to contribute in their victories.
The team manager Mike Matheny is acquainted with the fact as to the significance Molina holds and how crucial his being with the team is.
"I can honestly say -- I've watched him for quite a few years now -- I don't think I've ever seen him work like he has," manager Mike Matheny said on Monday. "I just think certain players have the ability to push themselves beyond contracts, beyond recognition.”
The four-time Gold Glove Award winner is all fit and set to repeat the amazing performance he has invariably shown as the team’s catcher throughout his career.
“I just think it's something inside of them, that they strive for greatness. For him to be out here in the dark working harder than all these younger kids just shows his makeup," the team manager said of Molina.
With a .305 average that he held during the past season, one of the strongest in the career, Molina has got the opportunity and dedication to prove his usefulness for the winning team.
