St. Louis Cardinals annihilated by Pittsburgh Pirates 5-14 – MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals were annihilated by the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-14 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on Friday, June 29 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Pirates’ Manager Clint Hurdle will be a proud man these days. Credit should be given to him for his excellent managements skills. Pittsburgh fell short of their targets last season but with their renewed self belief, they are looking in great shape to make
it to the post season this year.
"I do like the way our offense has thrown some punches back this month," Hurdle said in a post game interview.
For the Cardinals, David Freese grounded out to short-stop in the second inning to score the first run. Carlos Beltran also made his presence felt as he singled to left in the third to level the score.
Allen Craig belted a three run home-run to left-centre in the third to help St. Louis take a crucial 5-2 lead. However, the Pirates fought back strongly as they added 12 runs in just six innings to stun their undisciplined opponents.
"I don't know how to approach or embrace milestones like that," Beltran said. "I don't show a lot of emotions, but inside my heart, God knows I'm happy and pleased with everything I've done in this game."
"Kind of frustrating, very disappointing," Cardinals’ starting pitcher Adam Wainwright said. "I just didn't make pitches when I needed to, kind of a mixture of bad luck with some poor pitches."
With their win against the Cardinals on Friday evening, the Pirates strengthened their position at the top of National League Central Division standings table.
Right now, the Pirates are just one game behind the league leaders Cincinnati Reds and it will be interesting to see if they can continue their good work throughout this series to replace the Reds.
St. Louis, on the other hand, are also just two games behind the Reds and if they can regroup themselves, they will also have an excellent chance to reach the top of the standings table.
