St. Louis Cardinals batter Washington Nationals 12-4 in second game of NLDS – MLB Recap
St. Louis Cardinals battered the Washington Nationals 12-4 in the second game of their National League Divisional Series on Monday, October 8 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
"We know this offense has the potential to do this, It was nice to see this, and hopefully it becomes contagious and the guys just keep going," Cardinals' rookie manager Mike Matheny said.
Cardinals’ batted really well and outclassed the Nationals by a huge margin. Their experienced and talented upfront batters scored on quick successions and rattled the Nationals pitchers’ with great energy.
"If we get things going, we feel like we can carry the team, As you saw tonight, we put a lot of good swings on the ball and really drove the ball. It was a lot of fun," Allen Craig said.
Centre fielder Jon Jay scored one run and smashed two hits along with three RBIs. He batted aggressively and maintained his slugging percentage at .500.
"I miss him not experiencing this with us and he misses not experiencing it with us, But we did the right thing, there's no question. He'd have been the guy that opened the series," Nationals' manager Davey Johnson said.
Right fielder Carlos Beltran added two runs on his four at-bats. He smashed two hits and ran for important three RBIs. Overall he scored runs including two homers which certainly pushed the Nationals on the back-foot. He played offensively and remained consistent on his 1.125 slugging percentage.
First baseman Allen Craig scored two runs and three hits along with one RBI. He also showed good temperament on his five at-bats and maintained his slugging percentage at .778.
Along with batters, the Cardinals’ pitchers also did well on the mound and won the game for their team. They showed good offensive plays and did not let the Nationals to dominate during the entire game.
Jaime Garcia pitched two innings and received one run and two hits only. He struck-out three while his ERA remained consistent at 4.50.
Relief pitcher Lance Lynn pitched three solid innings and received two runs and three hits on his 5.40 ERA. Though he received two homers but he still managed to strike-out five Nationals’ batters.
