St. Louis Cardinals batter Washington Nationals 9-7 in final game of NLDS – MLB Recap
St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Washington Nationals 9-7 in the final game of their five-match National League Division Series on Friday, October 12 at Nationals Park in Washington D.C.
"It's just the kind of people they are. They believe in themselves. They believe in each other, It's been this style of team all season long. They just don't quit, and I think that just says a lot about their character," first-year manager Mike Matheny said of his team’s overall performance and explained to the media in great detail.
With this win, the Cards are now qualified to play the National League Championship Series.
"We've had a great year overcoming a lot of hardship, and to not go after them at the end was not fun to watch," later Nationals manager Davey Johnson said as he told the reporters about his team’s outcome in this particular game as well on his side’s season long performance.
Later Daniel Descalso said, "We knew we had a lot of game left after they scored six. Nobody went up there trying to hit a six-run homer, We needed to scratch and claw get ourselves back in the game."
In Friday’s final thriller, the Cardinals’ showed their best game and earned a worthy spot to compete for the NLCS title.
Their entire roster played beautifully and kept the Nationals under pressure during the entire game and eventually rattled them with great focus.
Cardinals’ upfront batting line-up did not drop the momentum and edged past the Nationals in style. They scored a total nine runs and allowed only seven in return which in the end proved to be the difference.
Centre fielder Carlos Beltran scored two runs and smashed three hits on his three at-bats. He started well on the plate and helped the Cardinals oust the Nationals with great determination. He kept the Nationals’ pitchers under pressure and remained solid on his .944.
Left fielder Matt Holliday also played well for the Cardinals as he ran for two RBIs and smashed one hit along with his persistent .238 slugging percentage.
Third baseman David Freese added one run and smashed two hits. He also played certainly well and showed his true offensive class on his four at-bats.
