St. Louis Cardinals beat Kansas City Royals, 5-4: MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals’ batters showed an outstanding effort throughout the game as they posted runs on the score-board in back-to-back innings and gave the Cardinals a 5-4 win against the Kansas City Royals at Busch Stadium, St. Louis, on June 19.
It was the third game of a three-game series and the Cardinals snapped the series by 2-1 against the Royals.
The Royals’ batters started well as they put one run at the top of the first inning, when Billy Butler doubled to the left field and Miguel Cabrera scored a single run. On the other side, the Cardinals went ahead by 2-1 in the first inning by adding two
runs. Ryan Theriot and Albert Pujols both posted two runs jointly, when Andrew Brown drove a single-run shot towards the left field.
The game levelled 2-2 at the top of the second inning, when the Royals’ second baseman Chris Getz added one run on the drive of Alex Gordon to the right field. Third and fourth inning went without any run as the pitchers delivered curve-balls.
The Cardinals’ starter, Jaime Garcia was reasonable with the ball as he threw 5 1/3 innings and permitted three runs on seven hits, including two earned runs. He was able to strike-out five batters and give just one walk on his 92 pitches.
During the fifth inning, the Cardinals took a 3-2 lead when Pujols hit a one-run homer (403 feet) towards the left field. Both the teams scored one run to their score-cards, but the Cardinals were leading by 4-3 at the end of sixth inning.
Wilson Betemit posted one run when Alcides Escobar reached to the first base on a bunt single. Skip Schumaker singled to left field and Brown added one run for the Cardinals. During the sixth inning, Pujols suffered a serious arm injury on collision with
the base fielder.
Pujols said, “To be honest, I can't give you guys too much until the X-rays and an MRI tomorrow. I know I'm pretty sore. Am I worried? Hopefully, everything will come out negative tomorrow. When I come out of a game, believe me, something is really wrong.”
The pitchers were on top and lifted the momentum of their teams in the seventh and eighth inning as they did not give any run. During the ninth inning, the score-board advanced to 5-4 when Escobar hammered a homer (393 feet) to the left field, while Schumaker
hit a solo homer (407 feet) towards the right centre.
