St. Louis Cardinals beat Philadelphia Phillies, 3-1: MLB Update
A collective team effort from the St. Louis Cardinals’ batters and pitchers resulted in a convincing 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at the Busch Stadium, St. Louis, on May 16.
The Phillies’ starter, Cliff Lee, was a little bit shaky with the ball as he threw 6 1/2 innings and permitted three runs on six hits including three earned runs. He struck-out four batters and gave away six walks.
Lee expressed his feelings as, “I felt like I threw a lot of strikes that were called balls, but whatever it is, it is. I'm the pitcher, he's the umpire. Its his job to calls balls and strikes and he felt like they were balls, I guess.”
The first inning passed away score-less for both the teams. The Phillies opened their scoring account in the second inning and led off with 1-0 when John Mayberry completed his single on the RBI hit of Ben Francisco. There were some amendments in the fielding
position of the Cardinals’ roster during the game. It was a surprising move when Allen Craig shifted to right-field from the second base.
The pitchers threw well in the third inning as it went score-less. The Cardinals’ left-fielders, Matt Holliday and Lance Berkman, both walked on the loaded bases. They contributed two runs for their team on the shot of Nick Punto and Ryan Theriot. The Cardinals
took a 2-1 lead at the end of fourth inning.
The Phillies’ Manager, Charlie Manuel, was disappointed with the performance of his team. He said, “We couldn't get nothing going. That's what we usually do when we're banged up. That's what we've got to do.”
No score was added in the fifth and sixth inning from the either side. Albert Pujols again failed to score even a single run. He said of his game, “You catch the ball, try and make the routine play and don't try to be too cute. Hopefully it doesn't happen
too many times but whenever he needs me I'll be ready.”
During seventh inning, Jon Jay hit an RBI single to extend his team’s lead, 3-1. The last two innings went in favour of the pitchers as no batter was able to score a run. Jake Westbrook was economical with his pitches as he threw seven solid innings and
allowed just one run on four hits with one strike-out.
