St. Louis Cardinals coaching roster expected to change with Mike Matheny at the helm – MLB News
With Mike Matheny in charge, the St. Louis Cardinals coaching roster is expected to see some changes in the coming days.
As Matheny took charge of managerial responsibilities for the Cardinals, there are news reports that the club will announce their roster of coaches soon.
Although there was no mention of exact date, it is likely that by the end of the week it will be finalised. The biggest return to be made is that of Dave Duncan, the pitching coach of the Cardinals.
Having vast experience and expertise in his career, Duncan will face the new rookie manager Mike Matheny for the first time. John Mozeliak, the Cardinals’ general manager, hoped Duncan will be back soon.
"Dave Duncan is under contract, and we are expecting him back," Mozeliak said.
Faced with the ailment of his wife, Dave Duncan has been looking after her. As the illness has taken a while, Duncan however, as Matheny stated, remains enthusiastic to return to the club soon.
"I have spoken with him, of course, and Mike plans to do the same in the next day or so," Mozeliak said. "Our hope is that he'll be back with us, but we do want to be sure that before we tackle all these issues as far as staffing that we all have time to
speak.”
The most important aspect of this is the fact that Duncan has one year of his contract remaining. While Matheny did say that the pitching coach was ready to be back soon, the positive response has yet to transpire.
On the other hand, Mark McGwire, the hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals, is also supposed to return soon. However his status, as the news reports say, is undetermined. As for Dave McKay, who is the first-base coach, there is no clarity on his status
yet.
With the new manager taking over the St. Louis Cardinals, what remains to be seen is how the club reshuffles the entire coaching staff. As to whether he will choose the old hands or prefer going for new is something that will be determined in the coming
days.
