St. Louis Cardinals confident despite Albert Pujols’ departure – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals’ manager Mike Matheny said on Sunday, April 08, that the team has made enough adjustments to sustain the pressure. He was referring to the questions pertaining to the departure of Albert Pujols.
The accomplished slugger still remains a hot topic even though he has long moved to the Los Angeles Angels after $240-million deal for 10 years. That might have brought a lot of changes in the offence, the team manager has a positive view about the post-Pujols
Cardinals.
While he agrees that the no club would wish to lose a friend of his stature, he thinks the likes of Rafael Furcal and Adrian Beltran can prove to be good substitutes.
"You never want to lose a guy like a Pujols or a Fielder, but we wouldn't have Furcal and Beltran right now if that hadn't happened," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "And they wouldn't have Aramis Ramirez. So you understand the value of somebody but
you make those adjustments because the game changes so much."
The team manager also took out time to talk about the Milwaukee Brewers, the team with whom the Cardinals had their first three-game series in 2012. He says he is quite impressed by the performance of the Brewers.
"I've been impressed with the Milwaukee club," Matheny said. "They've got a lineup that's going to score some runs and they've got some starters who have shown us that they've got the ability to shut you down.”
The Cardinals seem to have a wonderful start here at Milwaukee where they have successfully got over the Brewers. While the Brewers remain one of the toughest contenders that the Cardinals have to grapple with, what has become clear is that the Cardinals
are ever more favourite to retain the title they won the past year.
It, however, remains to be seen how things progress. The Cardinals will try to strengthen and maintain the grip, but the formidability of the challenges ahead will be the part of the equation. As to how decisive will the departure of Pujols will be, this
too will become obvious in months ahead.
