St. Louis Cardinals defeat Chicago Cubs 3-2 – MLB Update
The St. Louis Cardinals prevailed on Sunday, September 25 beating the Chicago Cubs 3-2 at Busch Stadium.
This was the 15th win for the St. Louis Cardinals in the last 20 games they have played, keeping their hopes alive for the NL wild-card race.
Previously almost out of the NL race as the Atlanta Braves had a comparatively big advantage, the Cardinals fought hard to stage a quick comeback to end the trail of 10 games. The win here also meant a 2-1 victory for the Cardinals in the three-game series.
Albert Pujols is rumoured to have been looking for some new club to play with. Even though not very forthcoming about it, he maintains he still has the commitment to represent for the St. Louis Cardinals.
"Right now, I'm still a Cardinal," he said. "I'm going to do my best to help this organization to the next level. That's my job. If I get distracted, thinking about what's going to happen this offseason, I don't think I'm doing my job."
Having to host the Philadelphia Phillies, the Cardinals want to focus on the upcoming series. "It's a 162-game season and we've had some good games and we've had some bad games," catcher Yadier Molina said. "Right now, we're playing pretty good baseball."
Monday’s game kicked off with both starters, Edwin Jackson and Randy Wells, pitching some strong innings out there. Both pitchers were relatively successful in containing the respective teams’ hitters. However, it all started changing from the fifth inning.
Geovany Soto was the first to score to give the team a 1-0 lead to Chicago. However, Edwin Jackson was quick enough to hit a sacrifice fly to level the score for the Cardinals by the time the bottom of the fifth inning came to end.
Starlin Castro singled to left against Edwin Jackson to score the tiebreaking run for the Chicago, having tried once again to keep the team afloat. But as soon as Randy Wells came to pitch the seventh, Yadier Molina homered to left to level the score once
again.
Cubs decided to keep their starting pitching right into the eighth inning. Randy Wells, however, was subject to a big hit by Rafael Furcal who homered to right to not only score the tiebreaking run but also pave the way for the team’s success. Wells gave
up three runs in his eight innings spell.
With the lead favouring the Cardinals 3-2, Jason Motte pitched a complete shut-out ninth inning to convert it into an outright victory for the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals put in a brilliant performance as they fought hard throughout the game and managed
to get a much needed victory against the Cubs.
