St. Louis Cardinals defeat Chicago Cubs 6-3 – MLB Recap
St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Chicago Cubs 6-3 in the third and final game of their three-match regular series encounter on Sunday, September 23 at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
"He just keeps going, he's had to play a lot of games this year with very few days off, He's done one heck of a job -- left field, at the plate and everything about this season has been one of his best," Cubs’ manager Dale Sveum said of his team’s poor performance against the 2011 World Series Champions.
Cardinals’ pitchers held the Cubs’ hitters with enormous focus and won in style. They did not give any openings to the Cubs’ offence and proved too good for them to play freely during the entire game.
"I've been impressed with the way he moves around shortstop, and he's taken good at-bats for us, He's had tough at-bats. That eight-hole is not an easy place to be. He's done a nice job with the opportunities he's had," Cardinals' manager Mike Matheny said about his team’s overall performance.
Starter Kyle Lohse stood tall against the Cubs’ upfront batting line-up and pitched with enormous energy. He tossed six solid innings and received only three runs and five hits along with one homer. He struck-out five while he also managed to maintain his ERA at 2.77.
Not only Lohse, but the Cardinals' entire rotation pitched intelligently and earned a great victory for their team.
Relief pitchers Edward Mujica and Mitchell Boggs both struck-out one hitter a piece and showed their commitment which proved one of the winning factors for the Cardinals.
Along with pitchers, Cardinals' hitters also contributed and secured a good win for their team.
Left fielder Matt Holliday scored one run and smashed one hit on his three at-bats. He played offensively as his slugging percentage remained consistent with .510.
First baseman Allen Craig added one run and hammered three hits along with two crucial RBIs on his four at-bats. He played aggressive and maintained his slugging percentage at .543 and proved one of the winning factors in the Cardinals.
