St. Louis Cardinals defeat Cincinnati Reds 4-2 – MLB Recap
St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-2 in the first game of their three-match regular series encounter on Monday, October 1 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
"It's different with this one-game playoff looming over our heads if we get there, I wouldn't expect a raucous celebration but, you know, some celebration is in order if we do clinch it," second baseman Daniel Descalso said on his team’s performance.
Cardinals’ upfront batting line-up played beautifully and earned a great victory for their team.
Right fielder Carlos Beltran scored one run and smashed two hits on his three at-bats. He played offensively and maintained his slugging percentage at .499.
Left fielder Matt Holliday added one run and smashed two hits on the three at-bats while he also remained persistent on his .497 slugging percentage.
Along with batters, the Cardinals' pitchers also played well and won the game for their team.
Starter Jaime Garcia pitched 6.2 innings and received two runs and six hits. He did well on the mound and maintained his ERA at 3.92. Garcia pitched in right areas and struck-out six with extreme power.
"I knew. I'm not going to lie to you. I faced him the last couple years and I knew I was 4 for 4, He's a really good pitcher and he made a mistake and I put a good swing on the ball," Garcia said.
Closer Jason Motte pitched one inning and did not give any run or hit. He struck out two while he remained consistent on 2.78 ERA which proved one of the winning factors for the Cardinals.
On the other hand, the Reds’ pitchers did not look confident in the field as they could not capitalise on their strengths as they lost the game.
"He talked to us about going shorter, but it doesn't matter, it doesn't take the sting out of it," Bronson Arroyo said.
Bronson Arroyo pitched five innings and received three runs and six hits along with one homer. He struck-out six while his ERA remained at 3.74 which did not help his team in the end.
