St. Louis Cardinals defeat Los Angeles Dodgers 9-5 – MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals had enough talent in their possession to beat Los Angeles Dodgers 9-5 at Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles on Thursday, April 14.
Albert Pujols made another homer of the season. The high-scoring games that the Cardinals are producing provided an ample amount of opportunity to their pitchers to put up an enormous offence with a now apparently impregnable defense.
The game got down to business when Hiroki Kuroda came pitching for Los Angeles as Ryan Theriot prepared himself to hit. He was not given any chance by Kuroda. When Colby Rasmus came to bat, struck-out swinging followed by Pujols, unable to hit and score
any run.
The Dodgers seemed determined to make a good start and the beginning was promising. Matt Kemp, facing Jaime Garcia, who was pitching for St. Louis, singled to centre where Jamey Carroll scored and Andre Ethier went to second. Garcia got three hits in the
inning, thereby somehow allowing Los Angeles to open their account and make a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals made a notable comeback, as Yadier Molina took on Hiroki Kuroda. He singled to left where Matt Holliday scored and Berkman went to third. Daniel Descalso followed, as he hit a sacrifice fly to right where Berkman scored, making it a 2-1 lead
for St. Louis.
The third inning was once again eventful as Holliday once again hit Kuroda. He reached on infield single to short-stop where Rasmus scored, increasing the lead to a comfortable 3-1. The Dodgers reduced the lead to 3-2 when Juan Uribe hit Garcia, doubling
to deep left where Kemp scored.
St. Louis did not seem satisfied with the situation as this time Theriot targeted Kuroda and singled to right where Descalso scored. However, Garcia was thrown out at third. A 4-2 lead was favouring the Cardinals when Los Angeles came in the fourth inning
and scored another run. It was Ethier who did it this time.
Cardinals found no solace in the 4-3 lead, as Pujols homered to left which enabled the team to make the lead 6-2. Garcia subsequently did allow any of the Angel’s batters to go for a hit. The lead, as it seemed, had given a boost to him.
At the top of the seventh inning, Holliday doubled to deep right where Rasmus and Pujols scored as it was Lance Cormier of the Dodgers who was subject to a hit. His vulnerability was further capitalised by Molina who doubled to right, as Holliday scored.
The three hits and three runs were enough to take the Cardinals to a 9-2 lead.
Los Angeles, in their last efforts, tried to come back in the game. In the ninth inning, when they were trailing by 9-3, Kemp homered to centre to make another run, taking the score to 9-4. But Ryan Franklin was then unhittable, reducing the Dodgers to 9-4
and paving the way for another victory for the Cardinals.
