St. Louis Cardinals defeat New York Mets 5-4 – MLB Recap
The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Mets 5-4 in the fourth and final game of their four-match regular series encounter on Monday, June 4 at Citi Field in 2012 Major League Baseball season.
Though the Cardinals had already lost the series 3-0 on Sunday with one game to spare but with winning this particular game, they at-least avoided the series sweep.
St. Louis manager Mike Matheny was pleased as he saw his team playing as one unit in the last match of the series. He tried his best to convey the very idea of playing united to his entire roster but with back to back three defeats proved no good for establishment
of his new strategy.
"Doesn't take much. Just a win," Matheny said with confidence. "That was much needed, and nobody needed it more than we did. It will change the atmosphere around here. You never know which win will be the one that helps you take off."
Matheny added explaining his team’s effort in this particular game, "Even early on, we started out with a few strikeouts. It's just one of those periods you go through, You just got to keep working, keep fighting. You've got to trust yourself and, fortunately,
we got a couple of big hits when we needed them and that's the thing we were missing."
Cardinals started off well and took the early lead in the fourth leaving the Mets trailing until seventh with two runs’ clear advantage. Though in the bottom of the seventh, the Mets levelled the score at 3-3 but with the help of first baseman Allen Craig’s
homer, the Cardinals again led the Mets and this time also took the game away in style.
Starter Kyle Lohse played well for the Cardinals and earned a great win throwing six innings’ spell and allowing only one run with two hits.
Despite this win, the Cardinals could not save the series and also lost the number one spot to Cincinnati Reds. Currently they are at third position behind the Pittsburgh Pirates with 28-28 win loss record along with .500 winning percentage.
