St. Louis Cardinals defeat Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 – MLB Update
The St. Louis Cardinals stunned the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday, September 16 with a 4-2 win at Citizens Bank Park.
Adron Chambers drove in the go-ahead run in the 11th inning backed by an RBI double of Tyler Greene to score a remarkable victory.
"It was a great example of what we've been doing," Cardinals’ manager Tony LaRussa said. "The guys were outstanding. We hung in there and got a great win. It was a huge moment for Adron and Tyler Greene got a big hit."
Chambers, playing in his first season got his first Major League hit to bring about this victory for the Cardinals. He was batting only for the second time in his career; that too in a very crucial stage. "It was a real thrill," Chambers said. "I'm really
happy about it. The situation came up for me. I was able to get the job done. Right now I'm just trying to play hard.”
The Phillies are not accustomed to losing as they were certainly disappointed by what had happened in the game. "We didn't do enough hitting tonight to get there," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said.
The fiercely competitive teams began their bid for winning from the start as Rafael Furcal scored the first run in the second inning. The lead did not last for long as John Mayberry Jr. scored a double to level the score for the Philadelphia Phillies.
Having Jaime Garcia at their disposal, the Cardinals kept the Phillies on hold, allowing little to no space for them to score. The strategy worked out as the Phillies found it exceedingly difficult to take an edge in the game.
Yadier Molina homered to left in the eighth against Antonio Bastardo to score the tiebreaking run for the Cardinals. However, as Jason Motte was pitching an effective ninth, Carlos Ruiz scored to tie the game once again.
With the best of starters and relievers available to them, the Phillies pitched well, as did the Cardinals up until the 11th inning. Michael Schwimer of the Phillies fell prey to Chambers who had the first hit of his Major League career to score
a single to right.
The tiebreaking run then paved the way for Tyler Greene’s double to turn the tide against the Phillies. With the lead now standing at 4-2, the Cardinals brought Fernando Salas to pitch. Carlos pitched a shutout 11th to wrap up the game with a
4-2 win for the Cardinals to start the four-game series with a decent victory.
The Cardinals put in a brilliant performance as they fought hard throughout the match. The Phillies will be looking to improve their performance before their next match-up.
