St. Louis Cardinals defeat Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 – MLB Update
Kyle Lohse pitched seven strong innings and Lance Berkman homered on Monday, September 19 to help St. Louis Cardinals beat Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 at Citizens Bank Park.
Poised to win the four-game series, the Cardinals maintained nerve-shattering pressure on the Phillies to prevail.
The win has now put the Atlanta Braves in relative discomfort owing to the mere difference of three and a half games that the St. Louis Cardinals now have with the former.
Having established their inviolable preponderance in pitching, the Philadelphia Phillies, however, on Monday could not carry on their strong forte forward. Roy Halladay gave up four runs in the eight innings he pitched with six hits.
Kyle Lohse, on the other hand, allowed only a run and seven hits, to wrap up a sensational spell of innings backed by the Cardinals dominating relief pitchers that rendered the Phillies helpless to score apart from Jason Motte who gave up two runs.
The Cardinals had early opportunities to bank upon. Nick Punto scored a single against Halladay while Lance Berkman homered to right to make it 2-0 for the Cardinals by the end of the first inning.
Lohse pitched strong innings while the Cardinals’ hitters looked for more opportunities to increase the lead for the team. Carlos Ruiz scored the first for the Phillies in the second while Berkman singled to centre to take the lead to 3-1 for the Cardinals
by the end of the third inning.
While Lohse succeeded in holding back the Phillies’ hitters, Albert Pujols doubled to left against Halladay to take the lead to 4-1 for the team, paving the way for the series win. With everything in the Cardinals hand, there appeared to be some sense of
complacency in the camp.
However, the Phillies’ resistance came in the ninth inning as they went for back-to-back singles against Jason Motte. Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino scored while the Cardinals’ Octavio Dotel pitched the Phillies out with a 4-3 victory.
The Cardinals put in a tremendous effort as they fought hard throughout the game to get a much needed win against the Phillies.
