St. Louis Cardinals defeat Washington Nationals 5-3 – MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals won their ninth game of the season as they defeated Washington Nationals 5-3 at Busch Stadium, St. Louis on Wednesday, April 20.
The victory did not come easy since the game saw its fair share of tense moments. With a seemingly slow start, the game gained pace, leaving everyone on the edge until the victory was obvious for the Cardinals.
When Danny Espinosa came on the plate to formally kick off the game, it was Jaime Garcia of the Cardinals who came out to pitch. Garcia gave out one hit in the inning, disallowing any run. With a scoreless inning, Jordan Zimmermann was to embolden the Nationals’
defence, as the Cardinals, on the other hand, could not start an aggressive game.
The game remained scoreless until the third inning when Colby Rasmus opened the account for the Cardinals. Rasmus singled to centre on Zimmermann’s playable fastball, where Daniel Descalso scored. Rasmus gave up two hits in the inning.
The Nationals came back in the fourth inning when Jayson Werth grounded out to third as Rick Ankiel scored. St. Louis fought back in the game, as this time with a certain degree of renewed confidence. Lance Berkman doubled to deep left where Matt Holliday
scored, making it 2-1 for the Cardinals. Zimmermann was once again made to pay for his minor mistake when Nick Punto singled to right and Lance Berkman scored taking the lead to 3-1.
Washington levelled the score in the fifth inning when Danny Espinosa singled to centre and Jerry Hairston scored and then Rick Ankiel singled to right where Danny Espinosa scored.
The Cardinals’ batters charged Zimmerman in the fifth inning. It was first Berkmen who singled to centre where Albert Pujols scored. Yadier Molina singled to centre where Matt Holliday scored, making it an emphatic 5-3 for St. Louis. Both teams then put
their heart and soul in the game to make a decisive lead. However, it was St. Louis which had a leading edge of 5-3 up until the end of the game, scoring another victory.
There was, however, a strong sense of rivalry to be seen on the field. The two pitchers of the respective teams, Jaime Garcia and Jordan Zimmermann were putting enormous efforts to stop the free flow of runs. However, the game saw hits and runs constantly
until they stopped with the change of pitchers. Eduardo Sanchez replaced Garcia, and Collin Balester replaced Jordan Zimmermann. But it was Mitchell Boggs of St. Louis who had to succeed in the ninth inning to contain Washington Nationals.
